"Drivers of SL"?
As Second Life™ isn't limited about how and what you can do, there are also vehicles, like cars, ships, various aircrafts. Only your (or the creators) creativity is the limit.
Surely, you can walk, fly, swim by self ... and you not really need a street or trains to get somewhere, as you can easy "Teleport" from one site of the grid to the other in less seconds (as long the Teleport not fails ... coughs).
But ... was you not ever had an idea, how it would be to dive with a submarine? Cruising with a car along some streets and just look around? Riding with a horse trough a forest? Sailing with a boat in the moonlight?
So you find in SL all kind of vehicles.
I was own some more simple ones, mainly for other functions and got also some more easy to handle for the streets ... and other terrain.
I am not alone about this in SL ...
... there are a bunch of groups of people that love driving and racing ... aviators, sailors ... and more.
One of these groups are the "Drivers of SL", or short "DoSL" ...
... some say also DSL, but there I think about my phone connection.
My History of "Driving" ...
While the Covid19-pandemic, I was somewhen start to brew the stronger need to do more in a community, a group ... somewhat with people.
But ... no ... it was grow a bit different. At the begin of the pandemic, there was come a larger flood of people to SL - the RL wasn't offer anything, so the people searched for activities in virtual worlds.
This was also to see with the guests that came to WaterSoul ... and with the larger number of staff.
While the endurance of the pandemic, the wave of people was ebb away a bit.
Some countries was gone back to normal, others was still in pandemic-mode.
It was in May 2021 where I was at some point "snapping" and grabbed the "gardeners cart" (ok, it is my item and more for an "other use" thought) ... and was driving a bit over the streets, that are in front of my parcel.
That was set some seed.
As there was at a next day, nothing happening, I was take a look on the map of Zindra ... and thought "Why not make a drive to the Zindra Mall?" ... and started to drive.
I would not say, it was "fun" ... but it was something different, new, interesting.
Then I was think "Why not also visit 'that' bridge - I only see it from the submarine yet." ... and was driving to some bridge on the continent.
On the way back, I was then not able to finish "the round", as at some Sim-crossing I was crash in a parcel with crude settings ... but well.
Yes, the street-network on Zindra have some parts bitten off, as the continent is since over 10 years not completed.
Some days later, I was look on the map and thought "Hey, that there, on the other edge of the continent, looks interesting. Why not drive to there?" ... and I was starting a larger tour with a "goal".
How the group?
On these "simple" tours, I was seen often a blue flag with "DRIVERS" waving at friendly designed parcels.
That was make me curious. There was a group ... and I joined.
At first I was mainly following the chat in the group-chat ... seen the (sponsors) adverts of sales and so.
Somewhen I was join into the chat and posted some picture of "my" Zindra-drive ... surely a bit fooling around, used funny pictures.
The response was very welcoming.
First "group drive"
I was catch on YouTube a video about these "Grid Drives".
I think, in June it was, one was happening on "Zindra", the continent, where I am on - not it would be such problem, to teleport to an other one, but it was make me curious, was is happening "in front of my door".
I got the "NavHUD" ... was first have my problems with understanding it ... but then started driving over the adult ... umm ... Linden Homes (?) on the "Horizons" island (?).
Them are somehow a mix between a new, modern designed mainland-area ... and the "new" Linden Homes with a given theme (but it's different ... also difficult to tell in a short way).
After that was a pretty interesting ride, I was decide to join the next group-drive, too ...
... and was stay with them.
As I also have a desire to picture stuff, I was start taking pictures ... many pictures. But how to show 100-200 pictures, which are maybe not all "that" interesting stuff in them, but showing the flow of the event? So I was got the idea of making from them a video, as it is more easy to host and handle.
All "rainbows and unicorns"?
Surely, as like in every group, there are things, that not work "that" well.
After the "glitter of new" is gone after a while, there are things, that turn out as "not that good".
For example, soon I figured out, some of the weekly drives are "extremely long" ...
... as usual, I keep my maw about such things not shut.
First I was "mutter" about it ... also showing some "protest" sometimes ... and somewhen also complaining open about things, as some others in private have the same opinions ... but not open bring it on.
I think, it's important to point on problems ... otherwise nothing will change to somewhat better.
Even the issue itself might not become turned off (fully), it might leading to enhancements.
Some nice thing on these Drives is, you meet new people ... some also "pulling in" to it ...
... and you networking.
I think, that is somewhat, what as get to sleep in the Zindra-communities, after Linden Lab pulled their presence out of it.
For my experience ... try, join ...
... try also a 2nd and 3rd time ... or ask someone if "it is anytime this way?!".
Some of the videos (there are also a bunch of streamers) will give you a good experience.
The drives can be done in a group ...
... or "alone" or with just some friends, outside of the group-drive times.
Every Saturday a new "NavHUD" or drive is released ...
... and (average) them are (or "should be") for up to 2 weeks possible to do.
Them have almost a reward at the end ... some are more good, some are ... um ... "nice thought".
